Working smoke alarms, installed properly
A working smoke alarm is the cheapest life-safety upgrade in your home. We install, replace and upgrade smoke alarms for Canberra homeowners, landlords and property managers, and we test every alarm before we leave.
What we do:
• Hardwired (240V) photoelectric smoke alarms with battery backup
• Interconnected systems, so when one alarm sounds, they all sound
• Replacing alarms that are 10 years old, faulty or beeping
• Upgrading old ionisation alarms to photoelectric
• Adding alarms to extensions, granny flats and new bedrooms
• Smoke alarm checks for rental properties, with a written record
Why hardwired and interconnected? ACT Fire & Rescue recommends hardwired, interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms for homes. Photoelectric alarms respond better to the smouldering fires common at night, and interconnection means an alarm in the garage or living room wakes the people in the bedrooms.
When should smoke alarms be replaced? Smoke alarms typically last about 10 years. Check the date on the back of the alarm. If it's older than that, beeps after a battery change, or has no date at all, it's time to replace it.
Renting out a property? In the ACT, rental properties must have working smoke alarms that comply with the Australian Standard (AS 3786), on every storey and between the bedrooms and the rest of the home. In NSW, landlords must also check alarms every year, repair faulty alarms within 2 business days, and replace them within 10 years of manufacture. We work with property managers to keep this simple: book us, we test and fix, you get the paperwork. Rules can change, so confirm current requirements with Access Canberra or NSW Fair Trading.

WHAT CANBERRA LOCALS SAY
SMOKE ALARM FAQS
My smoke alarm keeps beeping. What does that mean?
Usually a low battery or the alarm reaching end of life. If a new battery doesn't stop it, the alarm needs replacing.
Can you swap my battery alarms for hardwired ones?
Yes. We run new cabling where needed and can interconnect every alarm in the house.
Do you work with real estate agents?
Yes. We work with property managers across Canberra. See our Property Managers page.
How long does it take?
Replacing existing hardwired alarms is usually done in an hour or two. New hardwired runs take longer, and we'll tell you when we quote.
Related services: property managers, switchboard and safety switch upgrades, RCD testing and residential electrical.
