Home EV Charger Installation in Canberra
Charging at home is the cheapest and easiest way to run an electric vehicle. A dedicated wall charger on its own circuit is much faster than a standard power point and is built to be used safely every night.
Fixed-price installs from $850
A standard home install starts from $850. That covers a charger you have already bought, a single-phase connection, a short cable run from the switchboard to your garage or carport, and a switchboard with enough spare capacity. Longer cable runs, three-phase chargers, trenching or a switchboard upgrade add to the price, and we tell you exactly how much before any work starts. The price we quote on site is the price you pay.
What's included
• A switchboard and capacity check before we quote
• A dedicated circuit with the right cable and protection for your charger
• Circuit breaker and RCD protection to Australian Standards
• Mounting the charger in the best spot for your car and parking
• A neat cable run, clipped or in conduit
• Wi-Fi or app setup where your charger supports it
• Testing, commissioning and a test charge if your car is home
• Compliance paperwork (Certificate of Electrical Safety)
• Our 12-month workmanship warranty
How it works
1. Call or send a quote request and we'll text you for a photo of your switchboard and where you park.
2. We visit, check your switchboard, supply and cable route, and talk through charger options.
3. You get one fixed price on site, including any switchboard work your home needs.
4. We book your install, fit and test the charger, set up the app and show you how it works.
Where should the charger go?
The best spot is usually on a garage wall or carport post close to where your car's charging port sits when parked, so the cable reaches without stretching across the floor. Outdoor installs are fine with a weatherproof charger, and we position it away from where it could be knocked by a car door or bin. The shorter and more direct the cable run from your switchboard, the lower the cost, so we look at the options with you before deciding.
Chargers we install
We install and set up Tesla Wall Connectors, Ocular and Schneider Electric chargers, EVNEX smart chargers and Geely home chargers. We can supply a charger for you or install one you have already bought. Not sure which suits your car and budget? We will talk you through the options when we visit.
Single-phase or three-phase?
Most Canberra homes are single-phase. A 7 kW single-phase charger adds roughly 40 to 50 km of range per hour, which is enough to fill most cars overnight. If your home already has three-phase power, a faster charger is possible, although many cars can only accept 11 kW on AC. We check your supply and your car's onboard charger so you don't pay for speed you can't use.
Will it work with my car?
Almost every electric car and plug-in hybrid sold in Australia uses the same Type 2 plug for AC charging, so a Type 2 wall charger works with Teslas, BYDs, MGs, Hyundais, Kias, Polestars, Geelys and most other EVs. Tethered chargers come with the cable attached, while socketed chargers let you use your own cable. We'll recommend the setup that suits the cars you have now and the one you might buy next.
Solar and smart charging
If you have solar, a smart charger can be set to charge from your excess solar during the day, or to charge off-peak overnight. We set up the schedule with you before we leave so it works the way you want.
Does my switchboard need an upgrade?
Older Canberra homes often have boards with ceramic fuses, no spare space or limited capacity. Adding a charger to a board like that isn't safe or compliant. We check this first and, if an upgrade is needed, include it in your fixed price so there are no surprises on install day.
Paying for it: the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme
Eligible ACT homeowners can borrow $2,000 to $20,000 at 3% interest over up to 10 years for products including EV charging infrastructure through the ACT Government's Sustainable Household Scheme. Check your eligibility on the Climate Choices website before you book. Afterpay is also available.
Why use a dedicated charger instead of a power point?
Plugging the portable charger that came with your car into a standard power point works, but it's slow, often adding only around 10 to 15 km of range per hour. Running that load for hours every night also puts strain on a general-purpose circuit that was never designed for it. A dedicated wall charger runs on its own protected circuit, charges several times faster, and many models let you track energy use and schedule charging from your phone.
Homes and businesses
For businesses, strata and multi-car households we plan and install multiple charging points, including load management so several cars can charge without overloading your supply.
Every install is completed by a licensed electrician (ACT and NSW). Home Plus Electrical is family owned and based in Weston Creek, and installs EV chargers across Canberra, Queanbeyan and Googong. Recent work includes a Geely wall charger in Gowrie. Call 0433 976 398 or request a quote below.

EV CHARGER FAQS
How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Canberra?
A standard install with a charger you have supplied starts from $850. Your fixed price depends on the cable run, single- or three-phase supply, and whether your switchboard needs work. We quote on site before starting.
How long does an install take?
Most standard home installs are done in half a day. Jobs that need a switchboard upgrade or a long cable run can take a full day.
Can I use a charger I've already bought?
Yes. We install chargers you have bought yourself, or we can supply one for you.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Not always. If your board has spare space and enough capacity, we can usually connect the charger directly. If it has old fuses or no room, we will quote the upgrade with your install.
Can I charge my car from my solar panels?
Yes, with a solar-aware smart charger. We set up solar or off-peak charging as part of the install.
